On 17 March, the 2018 FINA/HOSA World Marathon Swimming Series Competition held in Doha, Qatar, was completed. In the female group of such competition, Van Rouwendaal, the champion in Rio Olympic Games, won the champion, and two athletes from Germany won the second and the third places. Xin Xin, an athlete from China, gained the 31st place; in the male group of such competition, Weertman, an athlete from Holland, won the champion. Zu Lijun gained the 61st place.


In the female group, Van Rouwendaal, a Holland athlete, had an outstanding performance, winning the champion with the results of 2 hours 2 minutes and 24.40 seconds. Van Rouwendaal, aged 24, won the gold medal in the female 10 km open swimming area in the Rio Olympic Games this year. However, in the World Championships (long pool), she only won 4 silver medals and 1 bronze medal but failed to be the champion. In the World Championships in Budapest, Van Rouwendaal was the first runner-up in the 25 km open swimming area.


German athletes were the first and second runner-up, of which Beck was the first runner-up with the results of 2 hours 2 minutes and 25.20 seconds. Wunram was the second runner-up with the results of 2 hours 2 minutes and 26.70 seconds. Three athletes were delegated by China, of which Xin Xin gained the best results of 2 hours 4 minutes and 01.50 seconds, obtaining the 31st place. Yan Siyu was disqualified because of violation of rules. Lei Shan did not complete the competition due to the impact of physical strength.


Sharon Van Rouwendaal, the champion in the female group, expressed that it was the best competition of her apart from the Olympic Games. “I was relaxed during the competition”. Although I lagged behind at the beginning of the competition, I advanced forward a bit when turning direction, keeping calm and making a sprint in the final 600 meters. In general, I maintain the leading position at the beginning, but in this World Series competition, I am trying to learn new tactics. At present, this tactic is brilliant”, said Sharon.


In the male group, Ferry Weertman, the champion in Rio Olympic Games and the World Championships Competition in Budapest was the red-hot favorite on that day. Zu Lijun, a Chinese athlete obtained the fourth place in the male 10 km marathon swimming in open swimming area in Rio Olympic Games, also participated in the event with Liu Shuyi and An Jiabao.


Ferry Weertman, with his experience in competitions and talent in long-distance swimming, won the champion with the results of 1 hour 52 minutes and 41.60 seconds. Among three athletes from China, Liu Shuyi finished with 1 hour 55 minutes and 49.50 seconds, ranking 50. An Jiabao finished with 1 hour 58 minutes and 24.30 seconds, ranking 59. Zu Lijun finished with 1 hour 58 minutes and 34.80 seconds, ranking the 61.


“I am glad to be the champion, especially having a good result at the beginning of the tournament. I felt good in the fourth round. I took the lead and Reymond from France caught up. He is an outstanding 25 km swimming athlete, who was the champion in the male 25 km swimming competition” in the World Championships Competition in Budapest. That was why I needed to took the lead, said Weertman after the competition,” said Ferry Weertman after the competition.


2018 FINA/HOSA World Marathon Swimming Series Competition sponsored by Hosa is a top-level International long distance and open swimming area swimming competition. Nine stops are set in the world, and the next stop will be held in Seychelles in 20 May.


From 2015 to 2017, Hosa sponsored the FINA 10 km Marathon Swimming World Cup and FINA World Diving Series Competition for 3 consecutive years.
